Dr. Andrew Weil a Hippie?
63
You bet your 'medicine bag' he is.
And who in their right mind could blame him. And considering his intellect, the age, and who he studied at Harvard with, there was no stopping him from becoming one.
But, it seems he was the one that was more level headed than his spaced -out 'buddies' were. Maybe too level headed. Or was it jealousy?
"How Timothy Leary, Ram Dass, Huston Smith and Andrew Weil Killed the Fifties and Ushered in a New Age in America." -from Don Lattin's book 'The Harvard Psychedelic Club'
Andrew Thomas Weil (Born June 8, 1942) may have been one to tune in and turn on in those days, but he was not one to drop out. And he wasn't the one to be kicked out of Harvard either. And as you'll read here; Andrew Weil was instrumental in getting Leary and Albert kicked off campus.
In 1963 Leary and Mr. Alpert (Ram Dass) were kicked out of Harvard for their
exploits, which included giving drugs to the undergraduates. One of the men
behind their expulsion, supposedly his buddies, was none other than Dr. Andrew Weil, still an
undergraduate. Jealous at not being fully admitted into their world or, as
Mr. Lattin suggests, getting the best drugs, Dr. Weil engineered an exposé of Leary and Mr. Alpert in The Harvard Crimson. He
took the pair down, Mr. Lattin writes, “with the zeal of a jilted
lover.” The older men never fully forgave him. (that's a Gemini for ya)
As an undergraduate, Weil majored in botany and wrote a thesis on the narcotic properties of nutmeg, and from 1975 to 1983 he was a regular contributor to, are you ready, High Times magazine. His early works explored altered states of consciousness, but he has since expanded his scope to healthy lifestyles and health care in general.
Dr. Weil expresses opposition to the War on Drugs, citing the benefits of many banned plants. He promotes the medical use of whole-plants as a less problematic approach to treatment than synthetic pharmaceuticals. Weil has also written about the healing properties of medicinal mushrooms and Psilocybin mushrooms in several of his books.

I follow Dr. Weil as much as I can, Thanks for the update and I new he was a hippie ages ago. Just like the rest of us that went through the 60's.
Well of course he's a hippie-all arrows point that way. :) Like the guy myself, irregardless of the Harvard 'pants down' scandal. I had a H.S. teacher that did the same thing Leary did with our class. I hung out, but didn't get into the drug thing, although my brother...now, that's another story. (I was the 'good girl' until I got out of H.S. LOL)
Nice work-facts I didn't know about the guy!

Dr Weil, Hippie or not...who's to say,is brilliant!I've worked in a multitude of hands on health care arenas and i can tell you it's going to the dogs.In fact,in some cases dogs get better care.
It's really defeating that unless you have a high priced private pay setting, that it sucks other than that. The patient care load is unreal as well, and much of the time, you can work yourself into the ground and the management doesn't really care about their employees or the patients.Oh they pretend they do...but much of the time it's not genuine.Well,I can stand it any more and after all these years...I'm making a career change because I've had enough.I don't know why the USA doesn't integrate herbal and traditional methods with the modern medicine and make it whole again and with a human approach! You're right on the money, and I say Bravo to you ...Dr. Weil!
